Program Description

In this presentation we will consider the way we choose to participate in each moment of our lives, that is, the quality and meaning of participation in our occupations, and how this impacts our overall health and wellbeing. For individuals with chronic pain, a focus on moment-to-moment, nonjudgmental awareness during daily activities will include turning toward the unpleasant as a way to learn, grow, and open oneself to transformation by what is discovered. When practitioners become aware of their own suffering and pain, they can meet their clients in a more empathetic space and help them learn practical life skills to guide them in the moment. These practices will help cultivate a certain kind of existential awareness that can lead to improved health and wellbeing for our clients and ourselves so we can participate more meaningfully in occupations despite chronic pain.
