Mental health services have become increasingly rehabilitation and recovery oriented in the last several years. With a higher percentage of state mental health reimbursements coming from Medicaid, it is federal not state auditors who will be examining mental health services to determine eligibility for reimbursement by reviewing the individual provider’s documentation in treatment plans and progress notes.

As programs in California shut down and positions are being eliminated, it is more important than ever that occupational therapists demonstrate and communicate their effectiveness. OTs need to understand symptoms associated with diagnoses, and communicate our services by writing clear assessments, treatment plans which reflect evidence-based best practices, and progress notes explaining how treatment, guided by therapist and client together, is proceeding and reflecting assessment and planning.
