Program Description

Dr. McCormack’s presentation will include etiology and genetic components ofposttraumatic stress symptoms, associated brain physiology, and therapeutic strategies& occupations which provide evidence for ameliorating the behavioral symptoms of PTSD.

Ms. Shukla and Mr. Johnson’s presentation will focus on the veteran population with PTSD and co-morbidity with other medical and mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. They will discuss ways that occupational therapists can recognize signs of PTSD and learn to employ simple strategies and interventions to help this population. They will describe the impact of PTSD on functional performance in daily life and ways to reduce the impact of the symptoms and related behaviors so that the individuals can achieve the highest level of independence. They will discuss the evolving role of the OT in PTSD treatment to assist the individual’s reintegration into their community and resumption of life roles and activities.

  • Describe the role of stress and how genes may trigger the symptoms associated with PTSD

  • Review therapeutic strategies and occupations that provide evidence for ameliorating the behavioral symptoms associated with the disorder.
  • State examples of behavioral manifestations of PTSD in clinical settings
  • Anticipate and communicate the impact of PTSD on an individual’s daily life
