Job Summary:

The San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC) is happy to announce a Permanent, Part-time (20 hours per week) Occupational Therapist, GS-631-9/10/11 opening in Neurology and Rehabilitation Service. The purpose of this position is to restore function, prevent disability, to increase independence and to promote community reintegration with the residents of the Community Living Center (in the “Psychosocial Cohort”). The focus of treatment is the remediation of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal impairments, cognitive and perceptual deficits, and deficits in activities of daily living and community living skills. Job Description: Under the guidance of the Client Services Manager, the Occupational Therapist is responsible for participating in pre-employment preparation including Intake and Assessments, and all services pertaining to the Occupational Therapy Department. The Occupational Therapist supervises the Occupational Therapy Interns.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides occupational therapy assessments, interventions, on-site evaluations, follow-up, one-on-one training and group work for CVE clients
  • Responsible for designing OT services and coordinating with CVE team members to ensure that these services adequately meet the needs of CVE clients and programs
  • Responsible for the designing and implementing Professional Development Seminars in collaboration with the Intake Coordinator
  • Responsible for recruiting OT interns and coordinating with affiliate academic programs to place candidates at CVE
  • Responsible for training and overseeing OT interns, including evaluations, documentation, and service planning and program development
  • Tracks significant interactions with clients in client database
  • Keeps a daily time log of time spent on clients for billing to Department of Rehabilitation and CBHS
  • Responsible for accurate timing and charting of caseload
  • Reports significant client events on a timely basis at Caseload Meetings to supervisor and/or other staff, and to DOR counselors and mental health service providers
  • Commitment to open, direct, and respectful communication. Commitment to the clientele of CVE. Ability to create a welcome environment for clients. Respects client choice. Ability to set and maintain clear boundaries while remaining compassionate

Requirements:

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Must be AOTA registered/certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy or be scheduled to take NBCOT exam
  • Must be licensed to work in CA
  • Must be familiar with SSA entitlement program
  • Ability to prioritize, perform multiple tasks, and complete duties with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse staff and clientele, including people of various ethnic backgrounds, mental health consumers and persons of diverse sexual orientation

Preferred Qualities:

  • Direct experience in the mental health community
  • Bilingual skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse population
  • Supervisory experience

Part-Time Counselor IV/Occupational Therapist

Overall Job Objectives: The Occupational Therapist (OT) works as part of the CSS Housing Support Team (HST) under the supervision of the HST manager. The HST provides support to individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are tenants of CSS Housing. The role of the OT is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the independent living skills of residents and develop comprehensive plans for the improvement of these skills. The value base within which services will be delivered is dignity and respect for each individual resident and a commitment to the resident’s right of choice.

Job Objectives:

  • Establish a close working relationship with an assigned caseload of supported housing tenants, to assist them in improving their housing stability and independent living skills.
  • Perform independent living skills (ILS) assessments and develop plans for improving these skills.
  • Work closely with Housing Support Team peer counselors to supervise the implementation of the ILS plans.
  • Maintain clinical charts following established guidelines required by County Mental Health’s Quality Improvement Committee and the State, to avoid denials in utilization review.
  • Complete required paperwork (billing forms, progress notes, etc.) in a timely manner as required by the County, State, and component guidelines.
  • Be a part of the clinical team in providing quality comprehensive clinical services.
  • Organize on-duty time in such a way that a percentage (to be determined) of the work day is spent providing billable OT services.
  • Be willing and able to respond to emergency situations within the guidelines of CSS Procedure Manual.
  • Communicate in a professional manner when dealing with fellow employees, outside agencies and clients
  • Attend staff and other meetings as required, and participate in the agency’s decision-making process. Abide by agency policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid and current Occupational Therapy license or license-eligible.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work alone, as well as accept supervision.
  • Must be able to work in an environment of varied cultures and disabilities including serious mental illness. Must be able to deal constructively with a high degree of stress.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license, private vehicle insurance, and agency insurance clearance.
  • If in recovery, two years clean and sober required.

Wage: $24.86 – $26.91 per hour, depending upon experience, plus 50¢/hour differential for bilingual Spanish speaking ability. Benefits include prorated vacation and sick leave.
