Program Description

This session will begin with an historical overview of narrative medicine and the use of theatre in addiction recovery. Following this brief historical overview, the speaker will outline specific and practical ways to implement narrative medicine methods in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, and discuss the purpose and intended outcomes of this approach. Attendees will participate in a narrative medicine activity, and will then have the opportunity to design their own narrative medicine activity specific to their current or desired clinical setting. The second half of the session will consist of an introduction to an occupation-based theatre intervention protocol for people recovering from addiction. The speaker will discuss the biopsychosocial aspects of addiction and describe, based on scientific evidence, how the theatre protocol addresses these aspects. Several adaptations of the protocol for various settings will be presented. Attendees will then have a chance to participate in some of the activities that comprise the intervention, and brainstorm other occupation-based approaches that can address the aspects of addiction previously discussed. The session will close with a short video depicting an implementation of the theatre protocol.
