Program Description

70% of patients admitted to John George Psychiatric Hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) return to the community within 24 hours. The OT Department sought a role for an Occupational Therapist in PES to assist the clinical team in appropriate placement of patients. Using functional assessments and brief treatment, including wellness tools, the OT Department justified and placed a full-time OT in the Emergency Room with extraordinary results. They are now successfully providing evidence-based results of their results in an outcome study designed and implemented on the unit.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the Alameda Model and its impact on the treatment programming at John George Psychiatric Hospital (JGPH).
  • Understand the value of OT in PES at JGPH.
  • Follow the process JGPH went through in implementing its program.
  • Identify how current data may effect the future state of the program.

OT staff will provide a tour of the JGPH facility.
