This presentation will highlight the complexities of addressing the intimate subject of sexuality and sexual activity within the confines of OT and the OT, client-centered, intentional relationship with a client. Topics for this presentation will include: terminology, personal clinical experiences, structure for addressing the subject, and the nuances that exist among a variety of diagnostic groups. Suggestions for increasing the likelihood of addressing this topic will also be provided.
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Acknowledge the terminology and the components associated with dealing with sexual activity (sexual activity, sexuality, sensuality, etc.)
- Use personal reflection to clarify their skills and limitations as OTs in dealing with and addressing the subject of sexuality with clients/patients.
- Develop a usable skill set—for example, PLISSIT, Intentional Relationship, Sexuality Questionnaire—to more consistently address this topic with clients/patients.
- Synthesize the link between a diagnosis and actions as a way to facilitate addressing and intervening with clients in regard to their issues.
