Dynamic Cognitive Groups: How to Set Up a Group to Reach Your Population
Presenter: Susan Edelsberg, OTR/L, GCFP
Friday, February 25, 2011, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Laguna Honda Hospital
375 Laguna Honda, Rm. A-300, San Francisco, CA 94116
Description of Program
A range of cognitive group exercises using a variety of sensory strategies will be presented in a hands-on, experiential format. Discussion will address how exercises can be adapted to fit your population.
Exercises will address the following areas of cognition and illustrate the extent to which cognitive impairments impact functional performance:
- Memory (auditory, visual, tactile, taste memories), delayed recall, working memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory;
- Psychomotor retardation;
- Planning (generation of ideas, categories, organization);
- Problem solving;
- Mental flexibility
Emphasis will be made on a weekly group structure following a format that has predictable and new components. We will attempt to recreate group structure and content in real time, so that participants will get a sense of the cognitive demands and expectations our patients are experiencing.
A tour of the new hospital and rehabilitation center will follow Susan’s presentation.
