Program Description

Evidence-based practice and education are fundamental to interprofessional collaboration and can lead to improved health outcomes. Upon completion of the course, participants will understand components in evidence-based practice and develop an interprofessional collaboration plan to benefit clients in a mental/behavioral health setting.

Background

The Centennial Vision, developed by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), recommends linking education, research and practice as one of the four strategic directions in the road map to advance the occupational therapy profession (AOTA, 2007). Evidence-based practice includes critical analysis of the research data for suitability with a particular client or population and translation of research findings into practice (Burke & Gitlin, 2012). Interprofessional Education (IPE) “occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care” (Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education, 2011, para. 1)  (Bagatell & Broggi, 2014, June).

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • identify components in evidence-based practice
  • understand evidence hierarchy and critical appraisal of evidence
  • utilize available resources to search for evidence
  • identify the benefits of inter-professional collaboration
  • develop an evidence-based inter-professional collaboration plan in a mental/behavioral health setting

If possible, participants are asked to bring a mobile device such as a laptop, notebook, tablet or a smart phone.
