POTAC Spring Friday Forum – Lifestyle Design

This seminar will enable OTs working in mental health to create a lifestyle design intervention for their service. The speakers will cover the findings from the USC Well Elderly Study I & II, illuminate the core principles of lifestyle design, and discuss why analyzing occupations matters and is key for our clients’ well-being. OTs will be guided through the process of creating a needs assessment for their specific service and will develop ideas for group and individual interventions in a mental/behavioral health setting.

Program Description and Learning Objectives

This seminar will enable OTs working in mental health to create a lifestyle design intervention for their service. The speakers will cover the findings from the USC Well Elderly Study I & II, illuminate the core principles of lifestyle design, and discuss why analyzing occupations matters and is key for our clients’ well-being. OTs will be guided through the process of creating a needs assessment for their specific service and will develop ideas for group and individual interventions in a mental/behavioral health setting.

Presenter Bios

Karen McCarthy received her MA and OTD degrees in OT at USC. Dr. McCarthy was an intervener in the USC Well Elderly Study II. She specializes in the Lifestyle Redesign® treatment process for wellness and prevention for a variety of populations including mental health and college students. Dr. McCarthy is an assistant professor at Dominican University of California and teaches psychosocial aspects of occupation.

Jeanne Jackson received her BS in OT with a minor in psychology from San José State University, her MA in OT from USC, and PhD in Occupational Science at USC. She worked at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center and co-developed and managed an Occupational Therapy Independent Living Skills Program for adolescents with physical, emotional, communication and/or learning disabilities. She was co-investigator for the USC Well Elderly Study 1 & 2, where she co-developed and managed the Occupational Science and occupational therapy based Lifestyle Redesign® program. Jeanne was an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at USC for approximately 20 years. In 2011 she was appointed Professor and Head of the Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Program at University College Cork, Ireland, and in 2016 Head of Clinical Therapies at University College Cork.
